Responsibilities

The Rare Disease Report Assistant Editor will be quick to absorb new skills and information, and someone who is willing to take initiative to develop both the Rare Disease Report brand and content. This editor should have top-notch writing and editing skills, as his or her time will be split evenly between both responsibilities. He or she should also be familiar with the digital space, and as comfortable crafting a compelling story as they are at tweeting, posting Facebook updates and editing short video clips - all of which must be produced with the publication's audience in mind. Additional responsibilities will include creating and proofing email newsletters, conducting and filming video interviews, and traveling to medical and advocacy-related meetings across the country. Rare Disease Report is the go-to news and information resource, not only for only physicians in the field, but also for advocates, caregivers, and the patients themselves; for that reason; personal experience with the rare disease community would be considered a plus.

Qualifications

Responsibilities:

  • Identify important medically-related news releases and write search engine optimized content
  • Keep current on developments and trends in rare disease advocacy
  • Work with editorial team to develop compelling content for medical professionals and affiliated advocacy organizations, including special features, website highlights, conference coverage, and videos interviews
  • Post and edit content for the RDR website using the MJH internal content management system
  • Help maintain social media accounts and develop compelling email subjects/content
  • Able to travel 10% of the time to attend professional conferences for the purpose of filming medical professionals, advocates, care givers, patients, and others within the rare disease community
  • Attend major medical meetings to report relevant findings and conduct video interviews

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of BA/BS or equivalent editing/journalism experience
  • 1+ years writing/publishing experience, preferably healthcare-related (will consider entry-level candidates)
  • Ability to manage multiple projects concurrently
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Superior organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Strong typing and computer skills
  • Ability to work independently and thrive in a fast-paced, fluid environment, meeting tight deadlines and high expectations
  • Familiarity with healthcare terminology, AP Style, and search engine optimization techniques are pluses
